Floor
sanding is the name of a process by which
you can remove the top surfaces of a wooden floor. And for this removal
abrasive materials are used.
You
can use various floor materials to sand say timber, cork, particleboard, and
sometimes parquet. Sometimes floors are designed and laid for sanding. On the
other hand in many cases removing the previous coverings old floors are sanded and
suitable wood is found hidden beneath.
Usually
Floor sanding consists of three stages: 1. Preparation 2.Sanding and 3. Coating
with protective sealant.
More
or less specialized sanding machines are used in all modern sanding jobs.
Generally three machines are used in the whole process. Large belt or drum
sanders remove the bulk of material. An edger sands the areas where the large belt
or drum sanders cannot reach, such as edges, corners, and stairs. A finishing
machine is then used for the final sanding.
At
the first stage you are to prepared. All nails are punched down which protrude
above the boards. Sanding machines can be damaged severely by the nails which
are being used. You can use Staples or tacks to fasten previous coverings (if
any) are removed to reduce the possibility of damage. You may need to remove some
brands or types of adhesives which have been used to secure coverings. In many
cases adhesives clog papers and running gear of machine are used but some can
even make it impossible.
The floor is prepared, now you can start
sanding. To remove old coatings first cut is done with the coarse-grit papers
and to make the floor flat. The height of different boards are need to be
equal. Across the grain of the timber large sanders are used. In most cases
common paper 40 grit is used for the first cut. You can use an edger where the
large sanders cannot reach. You may need to filling of holes or boards where
this is usually done in this stage. For the second cut you can usually use 80
grit papers. In line with the grain of the timber in this cut the belt sander
is used. Now the time you need to use the finishing machine to create the final
finish. You need to coat the sanded floor with polyurethane, oils, or other
sealants. Wearing a suitable face mask is recommended as because these are
highly poisonous.
Finally you get the beautiful floor that you deserve.
